SER observes international level crossing awareness day

Aware the road users, pedestrians in and around Level Crossings to avoid dangers of rail accidents

Kolkata: The International Level Crossing Awareness Day was observed at Moukhali Level Crossing Gate No.7, near Santragachi on Thursday, 7th June, to aware the road users and pedestrians in and around Level Crossings to avoid dangers of rail accidents. General Manager, South Eastern Railway S. N. Agrawal along with other Principal Heads of the Departments, Divisional Railway Manager, Kharagpur and other Safety officers of SER Headquarters and Division participated in the programme.

Later, a Walk-a-Thon was organised from Moukhali Level Crossing Gate No.7 to Buxrah Level Crossing Gate No.6. A large number of railwaymen, S E Railway Bharat Scouts & Guides, St. John Ambulance Brigade etc. displaying colourful placards and banners joined this mass campaign to create awareness about the importance of rail safety on level crossing gates.

General Manager while participating in the safety awareness campaign said that the safety of the road users and travelling public should be given top most priority. Close supervision and control over the workings should be exercised by repeated and random inspections at safety points including level crossing gates.

General Manager also stated that all the unmanned level crossings should be eliminated in a phased manner by way of providing Manning, Provision of Limited Height Subway, Provision of Diversion, Provision of Road Over Bridge and Closure.

SER during 2017-18 has eliminated 212 unmanned level crossings against the target of 181 unmanned level crossings which is 117% of the annual target. There are presently 149 unmanned level crossings in SER jurisdiction which will be eliminated by this year i.e. 2018-19.

General Manager advised the Safety officers to continue this kind of awareness programme around the year and requested them to bring district civil authorities and Police personnel to join the Safety Awareness Programme. Adequate enforcement of rules and statutory provisions would decrease and neutralise the rail accidents in Level Crossing areas, General Manager added.

Three Nukkads (Drama) and Baul song were staged at the Community Hall, Santragachi to spread the Safety Awareness amongst road users, rail users and the general public. Since the majority of rail accidents occur in Level Crossing areas, the elimination of unmanned Level Crossings will substantially bring down the possibility of rail accidents at Level Crossings. SER also provides CCTV cameras at Level Crossing gates to reduce Boom-dashing cases and accidents.


SER to run Howrah-Tatanagar Steel Exp with LHB coaches

Kolkata: With a view to providing more secure and comfortable journey to the travelling passengers, South Eastern Railway has planned to run 12813/12814 Howrah-Tatanagar Steel Express with modern LHB (Linke Hofmann Busch) coaches instead of existing conventional coaches. The services of 12813/12814 Howrah-Tatanagar Steel Express with LHB rake will start from Howrah and Tatanagar with effect from 11.06.2018 and 12.06.2018 respectively. The onboard catering services will be available as usual.

With the introduction of LHB rake, 12813/12814 Howrah-Tatanagar Steel Express consisting of 22 coaches will have the following revised composition on and from 11.06.2018 from Howrah and on and from 12.06.2018 from Tatanagar up to 30.06.2018:-

2nd Class Chair Car(Reserved) – 9, 2nd Class Chair Car(Unreserved) – 6, AC Chair Car – 3, AC First Class – 1, AC 3-tier – 1 & Power-cum- Generator Car -2.

However, on and from 01.07.2018 from Howrah and on and from 02.07.2018 from Tatanagar onwards, the composition of the train will slightly be changed replacing the AC 3-Tier Coach. Instead, AC Chair Car Coach will be increased from 3 to 4.

Railways have taken decision to run all mail/express trains with LHB Coaches in the near future for the safety and convenience of the travelling passengers.


South Eastern Railway observes World Environment Day

Kolkata: The World Environment Day was observed at S. E. Railway Headquarters, Garden Reach today (5th June 2018) with the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution – If you can’t reuse it, Refuse it” to raise awareness about the environment to protect the Mother Earth. This is a much-acclaimed campaign to establish changes all over the world to make life better and more natural.

General Manager, South Eastern Railway S. N. Agrawal along-with Principal Head of the Departments, senior officers and a large number of staff took part in an awareness campaign and planted saplings in different places of S E Railway Headquarters. A fountain was also inaugurated at the Maitree Park as a part of the observance of World Environment Day. This is a day to especially focus on the current environmental conditions to make our environment better. It is a day for rail passengers and rail users to change their attitude towards environment making a safe future.

S. E. Railway has been striving all along to make eco-friendly development in railways. This railway has also taken environment-friendly initiatives during the year 2017-18. To work in this direction and for a better environment, S E Railway planted 7.34 lakh trees in railway land across the four divisions. As many as 5094 Bio-toilet Tanks have been fitted in 1364 coaches. This apart, all the conventional lights have been replaced by LED lights in all 365 commercial stations of this railway. 274 Solar Panels of capacity 537.68 KWP have been installed over this railway.

S. E. Railway has also introduced disposal of solid waste in an innovative and eco-friendly manner. The process includes waste segregation at source, collection thereof by the entrusted company viz. Vital Waste and dispatch of the segregated waste materials to the local industries that use recyclable items as inputs. A waste audit has been conducted to identify and quantify the composition of the waste stream generated at S E Railway Headquarters and also to analyze its Environmental Impact.

World Environment Day was also observed at all the four divisions of S. E. Railway in a befitting manner.
