Hyderabad: The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Saturday, 28th April caught red-handed RITES Limited Group General Manager (Civil) K. Venkateshwara Rao for allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs.15 lakh.

The city unit of CBI has registered a case under Section 120B of the Indian Penal Code along with provisions of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act against Rao on the basis of information that he was demanding an illegal gratification of Rs.15 lakh for clearing pending bills to the tune of Rs.1.5 crore, out of a total contract value of Rs.11 crore.

Discreet verification revealed that Rao was indulging in corrupt practices and was actively involved in awarding contracts to various contractors after collecting huge bribe amounts. Recently, RITES, a Central government enterprise and PSU of Indian Railways, had awarded contract works to KVR Infrastructure Limited represented by M. Raj Kumar from Tamil Nadu for Rs.11 crore and presently the sixth bill amounting to Rs.1.5 crore was pending for clearance.

Rao demanded Rs.15 lakh for clearing the pending bill and Raj Kumar deputed his Project Manager Shankar to deliver the amount demanded by Rao.

A trap was laid and Rao was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe. Some incriminating documents were seized during searches conducted at the office of Rao, his residential premises and the hotel room of Shankar, according to a press release issued here by CBI on Saturday.
