“Propaganda Vs Reality”

#Kanafoosi between common Indian citizens

I partly agree with some friends criticising Congress, though political posts may kindly be kept at bare minimum in our whattsapp groups with different purposes and should be avoided unless they concern the lives and livelihood of members.

So the following longish post..

See, when a country is passing through a very serious phase of it’s history, it’s only natural for the citizens to debate, discuss, argue about matters of national interest and to express their individual and collective opinions on all possible fora.

But the pertinent point here is we should be fair, truthful and unbiased in our  assessment of the past if we really want a better future ourselves, our children and for the nation.

Let’s keep away the propaganda.

My take on the caricatures on Mr Rahul Gandhi:

1. I am no supporter of Congress. I was assaulted and jailed a few times opposing Congress rule in Odisha as a student leader prior to 1990. Also, I hate to blindly support any individual or party or ideology without reference to their actual performance and usefulness for the country.

2. Congress/Gandhi familly didn’t rule india for 70+ years. It’s a blatantly false narrative. So, we can conclude that this country didn’t believe in them for 70 yrs. First , Mr Shastri was PM after Nehru.

3. Then, they were thrown out in 1977 and many times thereafter catapulting various persons as heroes and leaders to steer the nation on alternative courses.

4. That’s how we had got others like Mr Morarjee Desai, V. P. singh, Chandra Sekhar, Gujral, Deve Gowda, Atal Bihari Bajpeyee and Mr Modi as our PMs in these 70 years.

5. Further, many State governments are non-congress for decades together.

6. It’s for History to judge the performance of all these governments elected many times on anti Congress narratives. We can find out who did what and which party/leader fulfilled how much of pre-election promises etc but it’s important to remember that the Britishers left us as paupers with an empty treasury, weakest defence, divided society, highest level poverty, dependence on imports for even feeding 70% of our people, no medical or educational infra etc.

7. So, huge educational infra including IITs, hundreds of Universities, big PSUs employing millions, a unified Railways, millions of Government bank branches, a reasonably functioning democracy etc must be credited to our past governments alone.

8. No society or country becomes great by ridiculing it’s past leaders however useless they may be.. We can become great by making the present ones efficient, truthful and accountable.

9. So, why waste our precious time discussing “Mand buddhis”? Rather, we should concentrate of our own brilliance, efficiency of current dispensation and performance of present rulers which are all fantastic!

10. Looking backnis important. It’s also useful. Yes, they have surely committed many mistskes. But, none is God ! For an objective assessment of our past performance, you can look for example at some other countries and societies like Pakistan, Afghanistan, Middle East, China, Brazil, Venezuela, Sub Saharan Africa etc which started their journey of independent existence around the same time as we did in early 50’s.

11. If you really want a strong, prosperous, developed and happy nation, you must invest in education, technology, healthcare, modern methods of agriculture and research. But, you must also invest in building strong, efficient and impartial institutions like judiciary, police, CAG, Bureaucracy etc for ensuring law and order, peace and harmony in society.

12. In this, we should take lessons from Japan, USA, Western Europe, Singapore etc and not from Pakistan, North Korea, Iraq, Syria or Africa.

13. I am sure,  all of us know the current priorities of various nations. So, results are and continue to be also visible on expected lines everywhere.

Therefore, let’s celebrate and enjoy !
