New Delhi : Indian Railways accord highest priority to safety in train operations. Safety measures taken on Indian Railways is a continuous process which envisages accident prevention and mitigation directed towards continuous reduction in risk level to its customers. This is done by adopting new technologies for improvement in asset reliability to reduce human dependency.
In the Budget 2017-18, setting up of a Rashtriya Rail Sanraksha Kosh (RRSK) has been announced with a corpus of Rs1 lakh crore over a period of 5 years. A provision of Rs 20,000 crore has been made in Budget 2017-18 towards RRSK to fund essential safety works.
Railways have introduced new technologies such as Train Protection Warning System (TPWS)/ Train Collision Avoidance System (TCAS) as means of Automatic Train Protection on pilot section to prevent accident due to over speeding & passing signal at danger. Further the TPWS System is under implementation at 3330 RKMs section on Suburban/High-density Route. During 2017-18, work of TCAS System at 1427 RKM has also been sanctioned.
Train Protection Warning System (TPWS) is being commissioned on Ghaziabad-Kanpur, Kanpur-Mughalsarai, Agra-Gwalior sections on two very busy trunk routes of NCR with the estimated cost of Rs 447 Crores. Earlier this has been implemented successfully on Nizammuddin – Agra section.
The conventional ICF rakes are gradually being replaced with Modern and more safer LHB rakes. During year 2016-17 LHB coaches were attached in 34 pair of trains including Allahabad – New Delhi Prayagraj Express. For this purpose total 42 LHB rakes are being used.
Safety measures taken to improve safety of Railway Track include usage of pre-stressed concrete sleepers, Long Rail Panels of 260m/130m length, and Track Management System etc. The trial of Ultrasonic Broken rail detection system is being carried out on Bamrauli-Bharwari section of Allahabad Division of NCR.
The safety at level crossings is of great concern for IR. During the year 2016-17, 1503 unmanned level crossings have been eliminated. This is the highest ever achievement. During the year, the highest ever number of 1306 Road Over Bridges and Subways were completed in lieu of level crossings. Along with it 484 manned level crossings were also eliminated.
During the year 2016-17, highest ever 750 bridges have been rehabilitated. Apart from it new foot over bridges are being constructed on various stations for facilitating the passengers along with ensuring safety for passengers while traversing from one platform to another.
Railway Administration also organizes safety awareness campaign for General Public, Passengers and staff. Administration also expects, the passengers to follow safety norms while passing through level crossings.
