GROWTH IN SER’s PASSENGER TRAFFIC AND FREIGHT EARNINGS

Kolkata: During the first nine months i.e. April-December of the current financial year (2018-19), South Eastern Railway carried 200.81 million originating passengers as against 194.85 million originating passengers carried during the corresponding period of last financial year achieving a growth of 3.06%. Out of total 200.81 million originating passengers, 104.87 million were suburban passengers while 95.94 million were non-suburban passengers. The growth in the number of passengers has been observed both in suburban and non-suburban segments.

This growth in number of passengers has resulted in increased earnings from passenger traffic during the first nine months of the current financial year. During April-December of the current financial year, South Eastern Railway has earned Rs. 1552.06 crores from originating passenger traffic which is Rs. 67.86 crores more than the corresponding period of last year i.e. 2017-18 thus registering a growth of about 4.57%.


GROWTH IN SER’s FREIGHT EARNINGS

During the first nine months of the current financial year i.e. April-December of 2018-19, South Eastern Railway has earned Rs.9254.73 crores from originating freight traffic which is Rs.392.15 crores more than the corresponding period of last year i.e. 2017-18 thus registering a growth of 4.42%.

This growth in freight earnings has been possible due to increase in freight loading during the above period. The major components of freight loading during the above period were 60.24 million tonnes of Iron Ore, 25.01 million tonnes of Coal, 11.51 million tonnes of Pig-Iron & Finished Steel, 8.27 million tonnes of Cement etc.

Coal loading during April to December of the current financial year has been 35% more than the corresponding period of last financial year and 8.5% more than the target fixed by Railway Board.

South Eastern Railway’s total freight loading during April-December of the current financial year has been 113.96 million tonnes as against 111.35 million tonnes loaded during the corresponding period of last year recording a growth of 2.34%.
