It was therefore planned to connect the Suburbs with Kolkata by introducing first and frequent Electric Multiple Unit Train along with electrification of Howrah-Kharagpur section. EMU Car Shed was planned at Tikiapara, ideal location for maintenance of EMU Rakes. EMU trains have a lie-over period during the daytime and Tikiapara being nearest to Howrah, the present Shed was Constructed at Tikiapara.

This is also a day of energization of Howrah-Kharagpur section. Initially, the Car Shed did not have an adequate facility for proper upkeep of EMU rakes. But this did not deter in fulfilling the commitment to the traveling public. Years went by and Suburban sections of South Eastern Railway have been energized with full electrification in a phased manner.

Tikiapara Car Shed is presently holding 100 motor coaches and 203 trailer coaches.  The Car Shed also imparts training to the Motormen, Guards, Loco Inspectors, Chief Loco inspectors & Maintenance staff with its locally made simulator. Tikiapara Car Shed is ready to handle the number of rakes in future to cope up the additional volume of the Passengers.
